Year 1: Interior Designer
1 year (and 2 months) into self employment. I’m writing this to remember the amazing clients that made my year and the lessons I’ve learned.
Let’s start with the title, Interior designer. It felt like a lot to take on the ownership and identity that comes with going it alone. Quietly confident with my skill set, I got to work – Interior Design, Online Design Consultations, Furniture Buying, Murals, Signage, Wall Colour Consultations.
August 2017. My first solo client was Tito, a tech company located in Dublin, occupying a beautiful Georgian building on Dame St. High ceilings, original style windows, rooms on multiple floors, with steps and stairs leading to different surprises – a dream! And, they were the most amazing client. We worked on designing their office space, meeting rooms, a cafe and podcast/webinar room. A project I’ll never forget.
September 2017 I began working with Tandem. Another fantastic project! Working together to create a space that reflected both the old Victorian building they were situated in, and the new technology they are building. The highlight of this project was painting a mural for their main office space inspired by Victorian tiles from the era the building was from.
Pointy was the next company I started working with in Dec 2017. An incredible startup, making big waves across online retail technology. They moved into a brilliant building full of history, built of red brick in 1892, a former railway parcels office. We worked closely to design custom acoustic call and work booths for their staff and brought bright, bold colours into the hallways, while keeping the original old fittings.
I began working with Maser in early 2018, designing an artist studio and gallery space. This project is a collaboration with Maser and Leigh Murray. We worked in a new build on Charlemont St and completed a fit out on a retail unit. It was such a pleasure working with two people who are so highly skilled and enthusiastic about their professions.
I’m ending this year comfortable in owning my identity as an interior designer. I’m feeling really grateful for the projects I’ve had and excited for the work coming up.
I want to give a special thanks to a few people I’ve worked with this year, who were necessary to the success of these projects coming together;
Michael Haden, Marek Mikolajczyk, Al Hester, Leigh Murray, Ned Karr, Feena O’ Sullivan, Annie Moriarity and Eoghan McCabe.
Thanks for reading!
